"Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the Church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore, confess our sins for one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed." (Jam 5:13-16).
We engage ourselves in the healing ministry of Jesus. We are really happy to participate in the process of healing that the Lord Jesus has commissioned his disciples. At present, three Oblate priests, Frs. Jude Roshan OMI, Gihan Senadeera OMI and Charuka Namal OMI visit eight government hospitals in and around the vicinity of Colombo, catering to the spiritual needs of the sick. There, we administer the sacrament of reconciliation, the Viaticum, anointing of the sick and we also empathetically listen to their stories.
Here, what is very indispensable is our ministry of presence and availability when they are in need. Though at times discouragement cripple our enthusiasm by seeing the continuous suffering of the patients day in and day out, it is the inspiration, strength and encouragement that we receive by celebrating the daily holy Eucharist in the hospital chapel which is dedicated to St. Peter, that we are able to continue. We are really grateful to the Almighty God for His abundant blessings we experience whenever we walk out of this chapel to care for the needs of the patients.
