St. Mary's church, Mattakkuliya parish is led by Rev. Fr. Ajith Perera OMI.

The church of St. Mary’s Mattakkuliya, dedicated to our Lady of the Immaculate conception which celebrated its 150th anniversary recently had its origins in the year 1861.

As the mission grew, the existing church was found inadequate to accommodate the growing population. In 1920 when Rev.Fr. Lagathu, parish priest residing at St. John's Modera, decided to build a new church for Mattakkuliya. In September of that year, Rev.Fr. Theodore Laboure, OMI was sent to assist Fr. Lagathu. The foundation of the new church was laid on 21 February, 1921.

Two-thirds of the parish which consists of 27 zones is surrounded by the Kelani river and is connected to Mutwal by land with the remaining one-third.

The population of the parish has grown by leaps and bounds since the early church and the parish census now records about six thousand five hundred.

Today we celebrate the Holy Mass in English, Sinhala and Tamil.

Today our ministries have grown under the leadership and guidance of our parish priest, Rev. Fr. Ajith Perera. The praise and worship conducted by Fr. Perera quenches the spiritual thirst of the parishioners.

The youth, the backbone of our church is led by the indefatigable parish priest who harnesses their talents to work for the greater glory of God - by encouraging the youth to join the different groups and societies. The charity services are carried out with the help of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul.
